What Is Humidity And Why You Need To Care About It?

Last updated: April 12, 2021

What is humidity? Why is this particular concept something that you need to care about?

Honestly, humidity is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but most people don’t really know what it means. However, you should at least understand its fundamentals, especially if you care about your health and your house or property’s structural integrity.

Allow me to explain this concept more thoroughly below.

What Is Humidity?

One should know that you don’t need to become a science geek to understand what humidity is. Well, I am not saying that being interested in science is a lame thing; in fact, it is the opposite. Instead, what I am trying to point here is that you don’t need to have a profound scientific background before you can grasp this term.

Again, let me emphasize that many are quite oblivious about humidity as a concept. After all, it’s a measurement of the amount of water vapor in the air, and to most people, water vapor is invisible. But it’s an important measurement, one that can tell you a lot about the current weather and even what’s going to happen in your city over the next few days.

Specifically, humidity is the existence of water vapor in the air. Hence, you can say that when the humidity is high, there’s a lot of water vapor on it. When the humidity is low, its water vapor content is low, too.

Aside from humidity, you have to understand relative humidity, as well. Relative humidity is derived from humidity, but it holds a more specific meaning. Technically, The relative humidity of air is a measure of how “damp” it feels. It is also a term used to describe the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at a certain temperature. The maximum amount of water vapor that the air can hold at a certain temperature is called saturation. (The relative humidity of air is the ratio of actual vapor pressure to saturation vapor pressure. In other words, it is the fraction of water vapor in the air.)

The thing that your weather reporter is reporting during the morning is relative humidity and not just generic humidity.

Where Does Humidity Come From?

Humidity is not an abnormal phenomenon. It occurs naturally in the atmosphere since water vapor is naturally existing, too.

Again, humidity exists because of water vapor. And at this point, we have to know where water vapor comes from.

Water vapor gets in the atmosphere via evaporation, specifically from different water bodies such as oceans, rivers, and lakes.

Furthermore, water vapor has to be considered as an essential aspect of the water cycle. Every time evaporation occurs, water vapor is generated; it is only removed by condensation.

If the temperature is high, it means the air can absorb more water vapor. Hence, in areas where the climate is warm, humidity is high. If the climate is cold, the air appears to be dry, which suggests that the percentage of water vapor is small.

For instance, at 86 degrees Fahrenheit, saturated air may contain 1 ounce of water per cubic meter. But when the temperature drops to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the air may only contain 0.1 ounces of water per cubic meter.

This particular nuance is the very reason why it is called relative humidity.

What Causes Humidity In Houses?

Obviously, there’s no seas or lakes in your house. However, this doesn’t mean that humidity is no longer an applicable phenomenon in your humble abode.

In fact, it is an issue that many people have been trying to deal with for many years already. While it is true that humidity is a naturally occurring phenomenon, this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have any harsh effects on your health and properties.

However, let me clarify that humidity gets bad if it gets too high or too low. Later, I will discuss the ideal humidity range where you can breathe the air comfortably. In the meantime, let me elaborate on the common causes of humidity.

Numerous factors can influence the humidity levels in your home. The actual design of your house and the materials that are used in its construction can cause changes in the humidity levels. The existence of insulations and retarders may become a factor, too.

Needless to say, the climate and the current temperature in your area have a significant impact on the humidity of your house. You can say that the average home humidity in Florida is higher than in Minnesota or Alaska.

Also, you need to take into account the HVAC systems in your home. For example, if your house is equipped with an extremely large AC unit, it will not help absorb the excess moisture in your space. You see, the coils in these air conditioners act as dehumidifiers. If they can run long enough, they will be able to reduce room humidity to proper levels. But it will never happen with large AC units, as they can cool your area fast. Hence, it will be able to run for extended periods, which is essential to guarantee that it can absorb the moisture in the air.

What’s The Ideal Humidity For Homes? How To Measure It?

The ideal humidity for homes is generally around 40% to 60%, with an optimal comfort range of 30% to 50%. I suggest that you stay on the 45% to 65% to ensure that you are experiencing the most suitable air possible.

However, you should mind your comfort levels, too. You see, each of us has our own standards of “comfortable.” I can be comfortable at 50% relative humidity, and you can only feel such a thing if the humidity reaches 40%. That’s completely alright, though. The only thing that you need to do is to make the proper adjustments.

Also, always consider your health, as well as the well-being of your family. Allergy sufferers require the air to be a little bit dry. In this way, molds, fungi, and other allergy triggers will not be able to persist.

Use a hygrometer to ascertain the humidity in your space. It is a device that can provide accurate humidity readings in your home.

What Happens If The Humidity Is Too Low?

When humidity levels are too low, a home can become very dry and uncomfortable. Not only does this make people feel stuffy and irritable, but it can also cause health problems. You may start to experience problems breathing, your skin will become drier, and you may even get nosebleeds!

Low humidity can also impact your body temperature. It can make you feel cold, even if the thermostat in your house is cranked to the highest setting. And since the humidity is pretty high, it is easy for bacteria and viruses to thrive.

Furthermore, low humidity is a common cause of structural damages. It can make furnishings, and wood floors warp, shrink, and crack. It can also cause wallpapers to peel or loosen. Behind the damaged wallpaper, molds can grow quickly.

What Happens If The Humidity Is Too High?

Humidity is high if the climate is hot. Hence, it is pretty common for excess moisture to take place during the summer. However, you may still suffer from humidity in any part of the year.

Areas with high humidity may suffer from various symptoms. It can be seen in the unusual condensation of the windows. The presence of stains and wet patches in the ceilings and walls. Furthermore, extremely damp air can generate a musty odor. It can cause your bathroom to be moldy. Keep in mind that high levels of humidity are the primary cause of mildew and mold growth in buildings, which can cause a variety of health concerns such as allergies and asthma.

Combining high humidity with high temperatures can cause troublesome problems, such as heat stroke. It can also compromise the structural integrity of your home. It can contribute to the quick deterioration of materials, which would result in pest infestation.

How To Control Humidity In Your Home?

At this point, it is essential that you can control your indoor humidity. Basically, you need to achieve the ideal or comfortable range for you and your family.

To do this, one must invest in either humidifiers or dehumidifiers–depending on your needs. In fact, you can get both of these devices at the same time.

On a cold, dry winter day, what could be better than stepping into a room that’s warm and cozy with the humidity level set just right? That’s what a humidifier is for. But how does it work?  Essentially, a humidifier helps to make the air in your home or office more bearable by adding moisture to it. It’s a good idea to run a humidifier on dry days, especially in the winter, to help keep your family and pets comfortable and safe, and prevent health complications.

Meanwhile, a dehumidifier is a device that removes moisture from the air to improve comfort in a room or building. Simply put, it keeps the air in your home from feeling stuffy and uncomfortable. It is an excellent choice for people who suffer from allergies, asthma, or breathing problems. Plus, it provides protection against rust, mold, and other moisture-related damage.

Conclusion

It is vital that you are aware of the role of humidity in the overall comfort and structure of your home. Once the moisture is set right, you will be able to avoid health complications and structural problems in your space. I recommend that you shouldn’t ignore the effects of unregulated humidity. Address the matter right away!

Why Do You Need A Humidifier?

Again, let me raise this question. And probably, you want to reaffirm this matter, too.

These days, people are asking about the essence of humidifiers. Suddenly, we see a sudden growth in the popularity of these devices, and it makes you wonder why.

Of course, I can say that it is not just about the fad or craze for these humidifiers. Based on how I see it, people don’t buy it because it is a popular commodity. Instead, many get it because of the service that it gives.

You see, low humidity is a problem, which is pretty similar to high humidity. When the relative humidity in your space goes below 40%, things get a little complicated.

Dry air causes a plethora of health problems. Here are some of them:

  • Bloody noses, bodily discomforts, cracked lips, and itchy skin
  • Amplified allergy flare-ups and asthma attacks
  • Furniture and structural damages

Nobody here wants to experience any of these consequences. This is where humidifiers enter the scene. By having a humidifier in your room, you will be able to combat the effects of dry air. It retains the right levels of humidity so that you can rest comfortably.

How To Choose The Best Travel Humidifier?

There are various factors that could influence your choice here. Let’s explore them briefly.

Cool-mist And Warm-Mist Humidifiers

  • Cool-mist humidifiers – They are the ones that spray moisture in the air without consuming too much electricity–given that they don’t have a heating element on them. Generally, the water they spray is similar to the room temperature. They are capable of encompassing large areas.
  • Warm-mist humidifiers – They are utilizing heat to boil water before releasing them into the air. The mist they produce considerably adds comfort and warmth. Furthermore, the boiling process kills foreign bodies such as germs. However, keep in mind that they use a considerable amount of electricity whenever they are heating.

You can also see ultrasonic humidifiers on the market. This kind of humidifier is available in either warm or cool-mist variations. They can operate quietly; the moisture they release is ultra-fine, too (hence, the name).

Floor Size

When we talk about humidifiers, we also need to discuss the floor size of your room–or any setting where you are going to put the device. You see, this particular factor can either optimize or degrade the performance of a humidifier.

In this particular context, we are discussing the best travel humidifiers. Of course, we can say that when it comes to this application, the humidifier must be small so that you can carry it conveniently.

You can’t bring a whole-house humidifier on your excursions and business trips!

But since we are bringing a small humidifier, we should also expect that its capacity is not as extensive as its larger counterparts. It can only cater to small spaces.

This is where portable humidifiers excel. These units enable you to place them near you. Even if you are far from a power source, that’s no problem since they can operate wirelessly. Simply charge them, and you are good to go!

Don’t ever expect that the humidification performance of these compact units can be on par with large humidifiers.

Runtime

Just because we are picking a small humidifier doesn’t mean that it has a short runtime. Ideally, it should run for at least 8 hours. That would be enough to cover you during your sleeping period.

The runtime of these portable humidifiers depends on the size of their water tanks and battery.

If the water tank is empty, these humidifiers will shut down automatically–even if their batteries are not yet empty. Oppositely, if you don’t charge these humidifiers fully, they will not be able to operate extensively.

A humidifier that allows you to plug it into a power source will run continuously. But at the same time, its operational hours will depend on the volume of the water it sprays and the size of its water tank.

Conclusion

Having the best travel humidifiers will save you from the effects of a dry environment. Since you will never know the level of humidity of your destination, it is better that you can have this tool in your baggage. In this way, you can maintain comfortable and breathable air wherever you go.

Why Choose The Best Air Purifier And Humidifier Combo?

Interestingly, the combination of air purifiers and humidifiers is welcomed. Based on their respective functions, these two devices go hand-in-hand with one another.

A purifier cleans the air. A humidifier ensures that it won’t be dry.

If you are living in areas where the “sanctity” of air is an issue, an air purifier and humidifier combo should be the right choice. It helps you make comprehensive treatments to ensure that you can breathe and fresh air.

One might say that it is better if you get a purifier and humidifier separately. Of course, that’s an acceptable choice, and you are allowed to do so.

However, many deem that purchasing these two devices individually is expensive. After all, we all know that these appliances do not come cheap.

If you will be given the opportunity to get the two in the price of one, would you miss it? Moreover, having a combo is quite cost-efficient, too. You don’t need to plug two devices at the same time. You only need one tool that can do all the purifying and humidifying for your home. In short, your electricity bill will not experience a huge increase.

How To Choose The Best Air Purifier And Humidifier

To get the most out of your money and time, you need to select the right combos. Several features are essential for these devices. Here are some of them:

  • HEPA Filter – Since we are still talking about air purifiers here, it is crucial that the combo you get must have a HEPA filter. A HEPA filter is not your standard filter that only captures large particles and dust. This particular filter addresses the problem of allergens like pollen, pet danders, and microscopic elements. Specifically, it can deal with 99.97% of pollutants that are as small as 0.3 microns.
  • Tank Capacity – This time, we are going to talk about the “humidifier” side of a combo. Among all the features that a humidifier possesses, one of the most important is its water tank. The water tank defines the runtime of the device. Basically, the extent of its performance is dependent on how big its water tank is. The larger the tank, the longer the humidifier can produce moisture.

Of course, there is one particular drawback here. Larger tanks mean heavier weight. It would be difficult for you to move around the device even in the premises of your home.

  • Reach or coverage – The combo is also rated on the physical dimension that it can cover. This simply means that not all air purifier and humidifier combos have the same scope. Some of them are designed for small areas like bedrooms, basements, and apartments. Others are for bigger areas and multiple rooms. You have to make sure that the combo you pick will be able to take care of your living space.

Don’t worry if the combo you pick is too big for your needs. The rule here is that the bigger, the better. After all, you can always adjust the output of these devices to match your preferences.

  • Energy efficiency – We have to scrutinize an air purifier and humidifier combo based on its operational cost. You see, it is not recommended that you’ll get a unit that consumes too much electricity. By all means, that’s a bad choice. What you want is a device that will not become a burden in your power bill.

You have to realize that air purifiers and humidifiers are designed to operate for continuous hours. Other homeowners, for instance, use them non-stop. They only stop their operation if the filters or tanks require cleaning already. But most of the time, they are just on a standby mode. If you are going to do the same, you should expect an increase in electricity costs. However, it still depends on the device on how much money you can save from it frequently.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Are air purifier and humidifier combos a good choice for homes?

A: Yes. They are practically efficient since they can do the job of two machines simultaneously. If you lack space or are hesitant to buy air purifiers and humidifiers separately, this option is a good choice.

Q: Is a HEPA filter necessary for combos?

A: As I said, this particular feature is crucial, especially if you have problems with allergies and respiratory illnesses. This filter is designed to capture and eliminate the elements that cause those diseases. A combo that has a HEPA filter is always a good choice. How Humidity Causes Sinuses?

Sinus infection is both uncomfortable and annoying. The feeling of having a clogged nose is a nuisance that many people detest.

However, a study from the Monell Chemical Senses Center indicated that there’s nothing that is blocking your nose. It said that the congestion felt might be due to the humidity in the air.

According to Monell, sinusitis is felt by more than 33 million around the world. Most of the time, such a condition is caused by allergy or infection. The latter can trigger the sinus inside your nose to swell. And once it swells, you can immediately feel that your nose is blocked. The sensation itself is not pleasant because it feels that you are being denied by air. Treating it with medications is not that effective, though, given the fact that there’s nothing that is blocking the airway.

The authors of the study, Kai Zhao, Ph.D., and Bruce Bryant, Ph.D., said that humidity and temperature tend to interact with one another as the air is moving through the nasal cavity. The nose has “cool sensors,” and they are the ones that detect these changes. They react adversely when there are abrupt changes in the humidity. If the air is too dry, for instance, your sinuses are deliberately harmed.

Hence, it is essential that the indoor humidity of your room is regulated. It is no longer an optional move, especially if you are dwelling in areas where humidity is a problem.

How To Choose A Humidifier For Sinuses?

Here are some of the guidelines that you should follow when choosing a humidifier.

  • Cool or warm mist – You got to decide whether you want a humidifier that generates cool or warm mist–or both. A cool-mist humidifier is the standard today. It is excellent for adding humidity to the room and addressing some of the temperature problems that can cause sinus. Meanwhile, a warm mist humidifier is great for cold seasons. They still keep the humidity in place, but at the same time, ensure that you can feel warm.
  • Humidistat – A humidistat is an integral part of a humidifier. This particular component is the one that detects the internal humidity of a room–if it is too low or too high. The sensors ensure that the humidifier will operate according to the needs of your space. Eventually, they eliminate the need for you to manually adjust the humidifier based on your guesses.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong if a humidifier doesn’t have a humidistat. As long as you can adjust the output of the humidifier, then there’s nothing that you should worry about. The only downside here is that you are pretty oblivious if your room has attained the optimal humidity level or not.

  • Mist output – You have to check if a humidifier is spraying mist properly. The last thing that you want is a humidifier that doesn’t even spray your entire room. Nozzles are being attached to these humidifiers to ensure that they can spray the mist an optimal height and reach. It would really be great if the humidifier has a 360-degree nozzle so that you can guarantee that there’s complete coverage.
  • Water tank – The water tank can define the runtime of a humidifier. For instance, a tabletop humidifier with a small tank will not be able to humidify your room for extensive periods. They can only run for 24 hours at most in their lowest setting. After that, you are going to refill them again. If you don’t want frequent refiling, get humidifiers that have large water tanks.

However, keep in mind that you don’t need humidifiers with large tanks all the time. For instance, if you are just living in a small room, a big appliance is never a welcomed choice.

  • Automatic shutdown feature – This is another essential feature that a humidifier should possess. Humidifiers do run on their own. Therefore, you need to guarantee that they can turn off their operation once the water tank is already empty. If this capability is not present, expect that the humidifier will overheat. If not, it will cause other electrical problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

How To Choose The Best Humidifier For Dorm Room

When you are planning to spend your next years living in dorms, it is essential that you can make your next dwelling place conducive and livable. It is not good to stay in a dormitory that is too hot, messy, and dirty.

The quality of the indoor air should be addressed, as well. How can you concentrate on your academic errands if you feel uncomfortable? Keep in mind that poor humidity can affect your health. In the exterior, it can cause drying and irritation. On the inside, it can deteriorate your respiratory health, especially if the dry air is already filled with allergens.

Accordingly, the appropriate room humidity should be around 40% to 60%. It should not be too low or too high. Having a humidifier will help you achieve this ideal humidity level. Even if you are just a transient resident in a dormitory, you still deserve such kind of convenience.

Here are some of the guidelines that you can follow in choosing a humidifier for your dorm and any on or off-campus residence.

  • Price – I need to emphasize price here as a primary marker in picking a humidifier. Unless you have great financial freedom, you will never risk buying something that is too expensive. I do understand that there are multiple expenses that are being carried out by students. The tuition fee alone is already a limiter to how much they can spend.

Of course, humidifiers may not come as one of their priorities. And again, I do understand that. After all, I have been in the same plight in the past. That’s why you should always be mindful when it comes to the price of the humidifier that you get.

I am pretty sure that you have noticed that the humidifiers that I listed here are mostly on the entry-level. I want to give you the best options without hurting your finances.

  • Size – You also need to be particular of the size of the humidifier that you get. Most of the campus dorms are not big. The room sizes are just designed for one to four people. Hence, you don’t need a commercial-size humidifier that can cater to large homes and offices. Even a compact model is already enough, given that you only need to humidify your own room.

But since these humidifiers are small, expect that their water tanks are not that extensive. But as what you have seen in this guide, most of the humidifiers that I featured have a long runtime. This means that they are able to utilize water efficiently.

  • Noise Level – I don’t think that you can live in a dormitory that is noisy. Even the smallest chatters can already disturb some other people. Therefore, it is not surprising anymore if many students simply want their devices and appliances to hush silently.

Fortunately, these humidifiers are not noise generators. For instance, the ones that I listed here have noise levels that almost don’t exceed 30 decibels. It is almost inaudible. In fact, the sound that you might hear from them is already soothing enough to the ears!

Of course, this is a warning that you shouldn’t get humidifiers that can ram your sleep or wreck your study hours. As much as possible, you shouldn’t notice that they are running.

  • Adjustable Mist Output – It would also be great if the humidifier that you get has an adjustable mist output. This particular feature is quite useful, especially in maintaining the right level of room humidity.

As I mentioned, the ideal indoor humidity should be around 40% to 60%. It should not be too high or too low. Otherwise, your dorm room will not attain a comfortable atmosphere. Being able to adjust the output of the humidifier can help you manually regulate the indoor humidity. If you feel that the air is too dry, you can increase the output of the humidifier. If you feel that it is moisturized enough, you can crank the humidifier to its lowest setting.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Is a humidifier safe to be used inside dormitories?

A: Certainly. Most of the humidifiers have an automatic shutdown feature that activates once the tank is already empty. Not only it prevents over-discharging and overheating, but it also prevents untoward electrical damages and hazards.

Q: Is it recommended to use the humidifiers overnight?

A: A humidifier is extremely useful in settings where humidity is a problem. The indoor air of dormitories is not regulated; they are always susceptible to be influenced by atmospheric factors. The dryness in the air can cause health issues, and if you are experiencing this, then running these humidifiers overnight is not a bad choice.

Q: Are humidifiers allowed in school dormitories?

A: This issue is something that the school administration can decide. But for most cases, this particular appliance is quite allowed. As long as it is not obtrusive, then there’s no problem bringing this device inside the dormitory premises.

Conclusion

The success of students in their studies can also depend on their physical environment. If it is too chaotic or messy, expect that they will not be able to study, complete their assignments, and do their readings. It will cause them to fail miserably.

The best humidifier for dorm room is an amenity that can help them in their transition to the new setting. It will make their dorm life more bearable and healthier for them.
